Michigan State was one of the early institutions to join the Kuali Foundation which that developed open source enterprise software for higher education institutions. Among the early projects of the Foundation was the Kuali Coeus Project which was an effort to turn the MIT developed Research Administration software into open source software flexible enough to be utilized by a variety of education institutions. Peter Asquith was asked to be the Director of MSU’s participation in this project as he had research experience both as a grant receipient and as a research administrator as a Research Associate Dean as well as IT experience as the developer of Administrator’s Assistant. To carry out this assignment he was given a joint appointment with the Office of the Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies and the Office of the Vice-President for Libraries, Computing and Technology. He was also appointed MSU’s representative to the Kuali Coeus Council. Among the other institutions participating in this project were MIT, Cornell, Arizona, Colorado State, Hawaii, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, Cal-Berkeley as well as others.
